As we approach the middle of August, it is that time of the fishing season for us as responsible anglers to be cognizant of water temperatures on our area waters. Unlike our neighbors to the north in Yellowstone and in Montana, we have not had to experience "hoot owl" restrictions and closures on our area waters.
That does not mean we can't be proactive and pay close attention to rising temperatures of the waters we fish. Typically, most trout are happiest in water temperatures that range from 52-64F. Brown trout are a little more tolerant and Brook trout are less tolerant outside of these ranges. Keep in mind that warmer water has less oxygen than colder water which is vital to a trout's survival.
On with the fishing report!
We are very fortunate in that we have good flows and stable water temperatures on our area waters for now. That said, our hatches of PMD's, yellow sallies, golden stones, caddis and terrestrials have been very steady and a daily occurrence. The Snake, Gros Venture, Pacific Creek, Buffalo Fork, Hoback and Granite are all fishing very well. With the warmer water temps, the fish in our area lakes have retreated to deeper waters or concentrated in areas where there is an inflow of fresh oxygenated water. Flat Creek has experienced a stellar opening week with good bug activity (PMD's, Callibaetis, drakes and caddis). Don't go out there without a good selection of terrestrial imitations. When I finished my day on Sunday at 10am, the water temp was a comfy 56F.
Be sure to stop by the store for the latest in conditions and "hot flies". And while supplies last, we are giving out free water thermometers courtesy of Trout Unlimited of Jackson Hole.
See you on the water!
